LHC experiments already produce more than a tenth of the world's total internet traffic every second, and the curve shows no sign of flattening. This review argues that the picosecond timing arriving in the CMS, ATLAS and LHCb upgrades is not merely another resolution improvement but a qualitative change — a fourth dimension that, combined with modern networking, makes triggerless real-time selection tractable rather than aspirational.
Why it matters · Timing, trigger and real-time inference are converging into one design problem; this is the clearest statement of where that leads.
Caveat: A review and a position paper, not a demonstration — the networking arguments extrapolate from technology trends.

For HL-LHC, ATLAS replaces its Inner Detector with the all-silicon ITk, whose strip end-caps are built from petals cooled by liquid CO₂ to −35 °C. Should the cooling fail and temperatures fall further, the sensors inside modules have been observed to physically crack, rendering the modules inoperable. The paper documents the investigation into why, and the mitigation approaches now being applied.
Why it matters · A decade of upgrade physics reach can hinge on the thermal mechanics of a glue joint — a useful corrective for anyone who thinks of detectors as boxes that deliver four-vectors.
Caveat: Focused on petal assemblies; barrel staves and the final production-qualified fix are treated elsewhere.
